Rates with strings attached

These apply only at a specific brand, or need something beyond how you spend, like a balance held with the issuer or a status tier. They are real, but we do not count them in the value above, which uses the rates any cardholder earns on ordinary spending.

Signup Bonus

FOR A LIMITED TIME, EARN 80,000 AADVANTAGE® BONUS MILES AFTER QUALIFYING PURCHASES after $3,500 in purchases in the first 4 months.

Value: $800 · Spend $3,500 in 4 months

This bonus is counted in full in the card's Year 1 value, and only when your spend meets the requirement. It's excluded from the ongoing value.

Who This Card Makes Sense For

  • People who reliably pay their balance in full each month. The 29.49% APR would wipe out the card's other benefits within a single billing cycle of revolving.
  • People who will spend $875 a month for the next 4 months anyway — that clears the $3,500 required for the $800 bonus, which covers the $99 fee and then some in year one.
  • People whose flights are mostly with Citibank, National Association. The 2x is where this card beats a general-purpose one, and it only applies to that spending.
